History

A lot has changed since the race was first established in 1985, but one thing remains the same: The Philadelphia Cycling Classic is a city favorite.

As one of America’s top international races, The Classic attracts over 250 elite athletes from more than 50 countries to compete on the streets of Philadelphia.

Since 1994, The Classic has included an elite women’s race, previously known as the Liberty Classic. Among the men and women who have competed in the race are Eric Heiden, Greg Lemond, George Hincapie, Megan Guarnier, Georgina Bronzini, and Lizzie Armistead Deignan.

In 2025 Carlos Rogers, Eric M. Robbins, and Michael A. Nutter of Race Street Partners announced the return of the Philadelphia Cycling Classic after a 10-year hiatus. The Classic is expected to draw over 100,000 spectators and reach thousands more through livestream and media coverage, making it a uniquely inclusive experience everyone can enjoy.
